Understanding Blurred Vision During Pregnancy: Causes and Care

Blurred vision during pregnancy is a common symptom that is often experienced by most women, especially in the second and third trimesters. It affects roughly 15% of expectant mothers and is usually linked to hormonal fluctuations. While usually temporary and related to normal pregnancy symptoms, it’s crucial to monitor for any sudden or severe vision changes, as they can sometimes indicate more serious complications like preeclampsia or gestational diabetes. The decrease in vision clarity, which may be temporary but can indicate as an underlying issue. Whereas, eyes will get normal 6 weeks after child birth.

The causes of blurred vision in pregnancy

Common causes which affect vision during pregnancy includes: 

  • Increased hormonal changes that can affect the cornea’s change in thickness. This leads to vision distribution.
  • Pregnancy can often cause the body to retain fluid that increases the pressure in the eyes and changes how light is refracted.
  • High blood pressure can be another cause that affects the blood vessels in the eyes. This can lead to vision issues that may require immediate medical attention.
  • Changes in blood sugar level can affect the lens of the eye temporarily, leading to blurry vision.
  • Pregnancy can induce headache or migraine and can be accompanied by visual disturbance.
  • Dry eyes is another cause which can reduce tear production, irritated eyes that may feel gritty or cause blurred vision.

During pregnancy, blurred vision is often temporary and shows harmless symptoms. It is vital to be aware of the signs and symptoms that could indicate more serious complications like preeclampsia or gestational diabetes. Early treatment is required for the health of both the mother and the baby.

Precautions to take for blurred vision during pregnancy

  • Drinking plenty of water can help to reduce fluid retention and prevent dry eyes, which can worsen blurry vision. And it keeps you hydrated. 
  • Give rest to your eyes by avoiding using mobile or TV screen, reading for long periods. Give your eyes frequent breaks, especially if they feel strained or tired.
  • Sunglasses are helpful in protecting eyes from harmful UV rays. If you experience light sensitivity, then choose sunglasses that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Give a good amount of nutrition to your health. Add foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E like leafy greens, carrots, and nuts to support overall eye health.
  • Seek your doctor for medical attention if your blurred vision is sudden or accompanied by severe headache, swelling on your hand, feet, or face, and dizziness or seeing spots.
